I've been away from the Oak Island for a long time so as per the namesake, I thought it was time to revisit it. It's been a pretty fucked up couple of years to say the least, both good, bad and everything in between, which I'll be catching up on(possibly) over the next few posts.
I've always found writing about things to be both cathartic and enlightening so for my own selfish reasons I'm going to get back to it a bit. My joys, misery and musings may be entertaining or create utter boredom. I can't judge that, I'm only able to contribute to it. Until then...

EP 2 & 3 and my theorem
Since last update, episode two and three of In a Nutshell have come out and I'm generally happy with both. Both have some great content, two focuses on full ring and three focuses on 6 max. Overall I'd say three is better than two due to my level of comfort, as episode three was originally episode four.
We recorded half of a blackboard video for ep two, with plans to pull up some hand histories to discuss. We ended up narrating the live play video for episode four, but it then got pretty late and it was a long trip home, so we didn't get back to finishing episode three because danzasmack caught a nasty cold. I hope to still be able to reuse the recorded material from the original ep three as I think there was some great content.
My Theorem
I've been thinking about this for quite some time, but wasn't sure whether I wanted to post it, but then decided I didn't care, so here goes. It's similar in principle to Zeebo's Theorem, but it relates to O8 and it's two parts.
Part one: Bad players will never fold a nut low, ever. This part is pretty obvious imo, but sort of leads into part two.
Part two: Nobody will ever fold a nut low that isn't A2. A lot of good players will fold A2. Almost none will fold 23, A4, etc. I'll give a couple of examples. 357h flop, a good player will often fold bare A2. Make that flop A27h, they won't fold bare 34.
That's it. Nothing crazy, but pretty static imo.

Pretty Disappointed
So at about 9pm last night I received the rough edit of the first video for the series, the video I was most worried about. I didnt feel like I was near 100% at the time of recording and I didn't feel like we had enough substance. It was a huge file so it took forever to download. So after 2 hours waiting, I finally was able to get to it. After about 25 minutes in, I came to the conclusion that it sucked.
Yep, sucked and I have no problem saying it. I didn't want it released and forwarded that along immediately. Aside from the fact that I was bumbling and my nervous uhm's were replaced with nervous basically's, which I must've said >50 times, it just lacked substance. It was boring. Chuck did a great job of soliciting questions or discussion, I did a horrible job of responding.
I immediately wanted EP 2 released as Ep 1, as I think 2 is a lot better. Being a live play vid, it allows for more concrete or direct discussion of specific hands in specific situations. I'm a bit frustrated about it as well. I'd really wanted a chance to preview it ahead of time because of these fears and if necessary a chance to correct/redo/whatever, I don't end up getting that chance and then it ends up turning out like it did. So really my biggest fears came true and my first release was way sub par, almost embarrassing.
So, to those that were really looking forward to it, I'm sorry.

Ohh yeah
My favorite show when I was a kid, or at least one of many.
Had a pretty good run from Christmas through the first few days of January, then ran into a brick wall for the past week. I got a ton of hands in(for me at least) and somehow only was down 1 buyin given that I ran into everything possible on a daily basis. Coolers and runner runners were the norm, which was compounded by the fact that the majority of it was against the biggest fish I'd seen playing in a while. I'm talking like vpip in the 90's with showdowns >40. Ugh. It did seem to start to turn yesterday though as I picked up a buyin in the afternoon and another 4 last night, along with another 1.5 in a few hundred hands today. At times I could feel tilt setting in, so I'm glad it finally turned.
I'm excited and super stressed as the video series on DeucesCracked is premiering this week. I recorded 2 episodes already with Danzasmack, one intro and a session review for FR PLO8. I'm stressed for a few reasons though. I've yet to hear it is one, so I have no idea how the 1st ep turned out. I was a bit under the weather, so my memories of EP 1 are hazy, meaning I may have been hazy or mumbling or rambling or... Krantz description on DC added a ton of pressure, Quote-

In a Nutshell
In 2009, DC ran it’s first ever member videos contest – the INSOMNIA training video festival. The winner was an incredible PL/NLO8 video from yeahthatsme. It was so mindbendingly awesome that we knew we had to work with Derek to make it into a series. Many sleepless months later (after hours and hours of thought, planning and work and collaboration with DC co-founder Chuck “danzasmack” Danielsson) and that series is ready to roll. We can’t really say much more than every single person we’ve told about this, including our high stakes coaches and friends, want to watch this insanely comprehensive guide to playing and crushing PL/NLO8. It’s a rare pleasure to see something this good come from one of our own. It’s your site, we really do just work here.
How the hell am I supposed to live up to that?!! Gaaahhhh.
I must say though, aside from the communication aspect, working with Chuck and DC has been great. Helpful, friendly, patient and supportive just begin to describe it. So check it out. If you don't have a DC membership and actually play poker and aren't a midstakes+ reg., then you are failing. A dollar a day is nothing compared to the growth your bankroll can achieve.
And I've got to stop doing crap like this:

If you don't listen to the DeucePlays podcast on Deucescracked, you should. They're free and top quality. This week Bart had on TheEngineer regarding UIGEA progress and discussion regarding the recent postponement. Interesting stuff.

Just the way it is.
Every couple of days or so, I plan on posting an update, yet inevitably I don't for whatever reason. I've even started typing new updates and pushing the close button after a few lines. I think I go through fazes of malaise when it comes to posting in general, whether it be here or on a variety of forums. Guess that's just the way it is, as I don't plan on changing at the moment.
It's been a busy 6 weeks since my last update. I had my show, which was lightly attended but active. I've been rebuilding a small cottage on my property, replacing the floor, building new walls, framing the door and eventually replacing the roof. I've been working on a few restoration projects, a variety of other random jobs, trying to play poker and trying get the PLO8 series made.
As far as the series goes, it seems to gain momentum, then slow down, then repeat. Around the end of September, Krantz was asking about who I could partner with for the series. I gave him a few, then some time went by, not much word aside from busy. Then around the end of October, there was a small DC meet up in NYC. When I say small, there were five of us in total. Aside from me, there were 2 other DC members and Krantz and Danzasmack. It was kind of awkward at first, as I was the first one there. Some introductions, small talk etc. By the time the other two arrived, things had relaxed a bit. We started talking about games, vids, etc. Then Chuck(Danzasmack) commented, "Did you see the Insomnia PLO8 video? That was awesome." I laughed obviously and explained, yeah that was me. After wondering whether they knew, this solidified that they had no idea who I was when I introduced myself, even after about two dozen emails with Jay and some interaction in the forums with Chuck.
After some compliments from both, we all moved on with a better understanding. Chuck and I ended up planning to do the series together, we seemed to get along well, so working together should be easy. Jay gave the ok later that week for the go ahead. So far Chuck and my schedules haven't clicked, but there's the possibility that we'll get started this week. It's supposed to debut in the beginning of January, so I don't want to wait until the last minute for the 1st episode. I really want it to be the best series on PLO8. As there's hardly any content, I feel like it's possible to set the standard.
I unexpectedly met Frank Langella today, that was pretty cool. I didn't realize it was him at first, he was wearing a hat and glasses and I was really looking at him. Then I realized I recognized this guy and a couple of minutes later put a name with the face. This was eventually confirmed after making a purchase. He plans on coming back, new customers a great, the fact that it's someone like him, even better.
I have a couple of hand histories to throw up, those will follow this, I'll probably just edit them in.
